What a busy weekend!
|
This weekend was a busy one at the display. We had visits with Santa both Saturday and Sunday nights. Saturday night was our largest night ever with traffic jams and a huge line of children waiting to see Santa. It was such a busy night that Santa even stayed past his normal 8:30 time to a little after 9:00 on Saturday and almost 9:00 on Sunday.
It was also a great weekend for charitable donations and we are thankful for everyone who has donated. The lady who runs The Forgotten Child charity was elated yesterday when she stopped by to pickup Friday and Saturday night donations. Now we have a whole lot more to get to her today!
The new “Letter’s to Santa” program started off kind of slow but our daughter, Noni, took some paper out to a child Saturday night and then EVERYONE wanted to write a letter. Sunday afternoon she made up a custom letter and last night we had clipboards and paper out for anyone to use. Before Saturday night we had about two dozen letters. Saturday night we got 31 and Sunday night another 15! All letters have been scanned and sent to our special North Pole email address so Santa and the Elves have your child’s letter but they may not get their reply before our visit, depending on USPS!
If you visited Saturday night, use this link to order pictures from Walgreens.
Sunday night’s photos can be found at this link.
Weather permitting, Santa will visit again on the nights of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th from 6:30 to 8:30 each night.

A few pictures from Santa’s first visit
|
Unfortunately Santa wasn’t able to land in Cibolo Saturday night because of the rain but he did manage to make it Sunday night. We had somewhere around 30 to 40 children and here are a few pics for you.
Remember all the pictures can be seen on our Facebook page.

Jeff’s live TV debut!
|
This morning Jeff appeared on the FOX San Antonio morning show to talk about the display and the story that aired Friday night on the same channel. It was a great experience and an excellent opportunity to tell people about The Forgotten Child.

Here’s the video.

Rain, rain, go away, Santa is supposed to come today!
|
Rain for us right now is a blessing and a curse. We need the rain but cold and rainy weather prevents Santa from visiting with children. We WILL NOT sacrifice the health of children. Stay tuned to this page or our Facebook page for updates.
On a happy note, we were on San Antonio’s Fox 29 news last night! Check out the video here. Jeff will also be appearing on Fox’s morning show Monday morning around 9:30.

The Lights are On!
|
Well it’s Black Friday and the lights are on as of last night. If you have been to the display before you will see some of the things we used last year but you will also see a lot of new items. One thing we have added is our “Letter’s to Santa” mailbox. Children can write a letter to Santa and if a return address is included they will receive a reply from the Big Man himself!
Here are a few things to know about this year.
1. The lights are on by around 6 pm every night and we try to turn them off at 10 pm on School nights.
2. The lights stay on at least through New Year’s Eve!
3. The “Letter’s to Santa” mailbox is available 24/7 from now till Christmas.
4. Santa will make appearances for photos with your family on Dec 10th, 17th, 24th, and 25th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm each night. We will take a digital photo and upload to Walgreens’ website so you can purchase directly from them or of course feel free to bring your own camera.
5. There is no charge for ANYTHING! We do accept donations of new unwrapped toys, new children’s clothes, gift cards and monetary donations on behalf of The Forgotten Child charity which assists children in foster care through CPS locally.
6. Feel free to park your car and get out to enjoy the lights up close. Please do not block our neighbors’ driveways and be courteous of other visitors.

October Update
|
We are well underway with getting setup for this year and already it seems, sometimes, like we won’t get everything done. One thing for sure is it seems like our Facebook page has supplanted this forum as our main conduit of information. I am going to try to change that.
So what has been done already? We have 11 trees decorated in the house. Decorations are going up inside. All the rope light and C-9s have been hung around the second floor roof and today we should get the final box of rope light so we can finish the garage roof. Our chair for Santa is getting a make-over and getting some much needed repairs. A new light fence has been tested and is getting constructed. Noni has lit up two freestanding 11 foot trees. And 19 new mini trees have been built and lit.
This weekend we will start to put up the Mini Mega trees that are in the back of the display and continue working on other projects. We are now on Foursquare and Facebook places so that visitors can check in when they visit the display. If you are on Facebook please consider “liking” our page. As of this morning we have nearly 400 followers on Facebook.
Oh yeah I almost forgot! There are so many new things going on with the display I almost forgot the new Letters to/from Santa program! Kids can write their letters to Santa and drop them off in the specially marked mail box and get a letter back from Santa himself. We are very excited about this new element.

I Bet You Are Wondering
|
If you’ve been following our website this season, you know that September 1st was the Official first day of decorating.
We started the month with indoor trees and haven’t gotten any more tree pictures on the website. September seems to be throwing us a few roadblocks. Jeff was going to work on the 2 new 20 ft mega-trees but we’ve had some setbacks in parts. I have been battling the dreaded coconut allergy. It’s amazing all the places they hide coconut and coconut oil these days! So, long story short, we haven’t accomplished much and I spent most of last weekend trying to recover.
Enough about that. Here’s the rundown. The two white trees are up, shaped, and lit. Ornaments are continuing to be added this week and I need to pull the tree toppers out of the garage. These trees are “kitchen” themed. Basically, that goes with our Candy Land theme we’re building outdoors.
Brody’s tree is all set up in his room. He called his tree first (a tradition in our house) and chose a penguin theme. This was PERFECT because Jeff brought home TONS of penguin ornaments from the Hendersonville auction. I’ll be the first to admit that some of our trees aren’t the greatest. Truth is, the cheaper trees aren’t as full and seem to fit better in the small spaces. Plus, I bought them one season at Target on clearance for 75% off (at least). At 75% off, they work for me! So, back to Brody’s tree. He wanted the world to think he had the best tree EVER but couldn’t figure out how he was going to accomplish his goal. Jeff came to the rescue with a super snazzy rotating tree stand with a remote control and a fader that makes the lights change from red to white. Of course, Jeff is again Brody’s hero. Come on, what 9 year old boy wouldn’t want a tree that spins and changes colors that he can turn on and off from bed? He added some red and white balls and his penguins and is in love. I just need to find a tree topper for him…not that he cares about tree toppers.
Jeff’s cars for his car tree are all out of their boxes and ready to go on their tree. I’ll have that wrapped up by this weekend. You are all here to make sure I get it done, right? I’ll tell you all about this tree after I get it put together.
The western tree is started as well. The tree is shaped and the lights are started. All the ornaments are ready to go. I’m just waiting for my helpers. Trees aren’t as fun if you don’t decorate them together.
I am debating the entry tree and the family tree. We can’t decide which one we want to replace this year. The family tree has been around a while, but I think the entry tree needs to be a little taller. I’m telling you, it’s a tough decision. All I know is, I don’t want to take the decorations off the tree and start over. So, I may hold off on those two and move on to the dining room and our bedroom. Or maybe I’ll put up a tree for the dogs. Who knows.
I went to Garden Ridge today with my littlest helper to scope out the new trees and grab a few ornaments. OK, maybe more than a few. I can’t help it!! Their gingerbread and candy ornaments were really cool. There were also a few that were amazingly similar to a Dept 56 ornament we picked up earlier in the year in New Braunfels. In fact, I almost like Garden Ridge’s cheaper version better. (Don’t tell anyone, ok?)
We should be updating the website with pictures this weekend. Until then, check out Brody’s super cool new hat for this season. Of course, the mother in me had to immediately tell him that he couldn’t ride his bike with this hat on (it goes all the way down to his knees!). This hat is so cool that if it’s a really cold Santa Saturday at our display it can double as a scarf. Brody says he prefers to think of it as a “Harf” because it’s half hat and half scarf. He’s a keeper! Pretty cool, don’t you think?
We hope you guys are all as excited about this season as we are. One last thing, board game manufacturers are starting to offer great coupons. These make great charity donations! I’m sure we’ll be adding to our already growing pile of gifts our family is donating to Zenobia with The Forgotten Child! If you are looking for a charity this season, our webpage has some great information on The Forgotten Child. Check out the video!

It’s official….decorating 2011 is underway!
|
It’s September 1st and other than it being Jeff’s mom’s birthday, today is significant because today is the agreed upon day which starts the decorating season for our family. Why so early? Once you officially go over the edge you have to start earlier and earlier. This year we hope to alleviate some of the stuff of the season by starting early and getting the lion’s share of the indoor decorating done before most people even think about Christmas.
As is normal Brody requested the coveted first tree and his theme this year will be a Penguin theme with fading red and white lights. He wanted some light action! We are also hoping to surprise him with making it an ultra cool rotating tree. So far his tree is out of the box and shaped. Along with it, Jeff’s car tree is put together and ready to be shaped. Michelle’s twin white trees are up, lit up, and being shaped as I type this. For those quick on their feet, that is indeed four trees at least partially up on September 1st….you gotta problem with that?
Here’s a picture of Michelle shaping the new white tree.

Facebook Followers, Four Square and what is a Gowalla?
|
Over the past week or so our Facebook page has gained a lot of new followers as Michelle and I have added a lot of our Christmas Light friends and acquaintances to our own profiles in an effort to increase the number of local people who know about the display. Why do this? Quite simply, the charity we support, needs more support and we want to share their story with more people. Henceforth, we have gone from about 50 followers to hitting 100 today!
On the topic of Facebook they announced this week that they are abandoning their Places application which we planned on using during the display run this year. Because of this we have signed up for Four Square and Gowalla which are both applications which allow you to use a smart phone to “check in” at the display. The great thing about these types of programs are many people use them to update their Facebook accounts with their location which means more publicity again.
We are also looking at other ways to help The Forgotten Child to raise money and awareness. Stay tuned for more info and a hearty WELCOME to all our new fans!
—Jeff and Michelle
